The Cantonment police have recovered two diamond-studded rings and some melted gold during a search of a jeweller’s store linked to a recent bank locker theft.
The theft, which involved ornaments and valuables worth ₹2.78 crore, occurred between August 13 and 20 at the Punjab National Bank’s M G Road branch, belonging to a general manager of a food processing firm.
Senior Inspector Girish Digavkar stated that the police are in the process of assessing the value of the recovered items and will verify them with the complainant, Yash Kapoor.
A senior manager at the PNB branch and the jeweller have been arrested, with charges filed against five others, including a 73-year-old customer who mistakenly took Kapoor’s belongings due to similar locker numbers.
The elderly suspect has difficulty recalling the items he removed from Kapoor’s locker, and police plan to continue questioning him. Kapoor reported the theft on September 6, leading to a formal FIR registration on Monday night.
A PNB spokesperson confirmed that a departmental inquiry has been initiated following the incident, which involved an employee mistakenly triggering the break-open procedure for Kapoor’s locker.
