The CIBJO Gemmological Commission has released a report ahead of the 2024 CIBJO Congress in Shanghai, advocating for universal best practices for gem laboratories.
The report suggests using the CIBJO Gemmological Laboratories Blue Book, a comprehensive 300-page guide, as a standard, which may lead to the creation of an international registry for compliant labs.
Currently, many countries lack regulations governing gem laboratories, posing risks to the industry and consumers. The Blue Book aligns with ISO 17025, offering specific methodologies tailored to the gemstone and jewellery sectors.
It outlines requirements for establishing reliable gem labs, including management practices and ensuring impartiality.
The Commission plans to explore a mechanism for recognizing laboratories that comply with Blue Book standards, potentially issuing a “CIBJO Acknowledgement of Gemmological Laboratories.”
This registry would assist consumers and industry professionals in identifying reputable labs. However, recognition does not imply CIBJO’s endorsement of specific results; individual laboratories remain responsible for their operations.
