The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) is ramping up its efforts to prevent jewellers from not displaying the Hallmark Unique Identification (HUID) number on gold ornaments, a requirement established by a 2023 regulation.
Per a report by Indian Jeweller, as of early July, BIS has been conducting raids to ensure compliance, leading to several jewellers facing criminal charges for non-adherence.
The Indian government mandated in April 2023 that all gold ornaments must display the HUID number.
However, the report stated that despite these regulations, only 70-80% of jewellers have implemented the requirement. This has prompted BIS to take stringent actions to protect consumer interests and maintain industry standards.
