Joy Alukkas, chairman of the Joyalukkas jewellery group, recently shared the story behind his first Rolls-Royce purchase and his growing luxury car collection.
According to a report in The Hindustan Times, Alukkas, who is the 50th richest person in India with a net worth of $4.4 billion, recounted a 2000 incident at a Rolls-Royce showroom in Dubai.
The report added that during his visit, a staff member suggested he visit a Mitsubishi showroom instead of viewing the Rolls-Royce.
Feeling insulted, Alukkas decided to buy the car and later gifted it through his jewellery chain’s raffle draw in the UAE.
In March of this year, he added a Rolls-Royce Cullinan, valued at ₹6 crore, to his collection.
Per the report, Alukkas, who dropped out of school, started his family’s first overseas store in Abu Dhabi in 1987 before founding Joyalukkas.
The brand now operates over 100 outlets in India and 60 internationally, and includes the world’s largest gold jewellery retail outlet in Chennai.
According to Forbes, his net worth increased from $2.8 billion in 2023 to $4.4 billion in 2024, placing him at 712th on the Forbes Billionaires List for 2024.
