A Mumbai-based jeweler has returned stolen gold to his former employer after 18 years, seeking forgiveness and resolving a long-standing theft case.
As per a report in Kaumudi online, Mahindra, now a successful businessman owning four jewelry stores in Mumbai, recently compensated his former employer, Venugopal of Kallarakkal Jewelry, with twice the current value of the stolen goods.
According to the report, the theft occurred in 2006 when Mahindra, a trusted employee responsible for transporting gold for refinement, disappeared with 30 pavans of gold and ₹1.5 lakhs borrowed from a friend.
The case remained unsolved for nearly two decades due to a lack of evidence and photographs of the suspect.
A breakthrough came when Venugopal’s persistent complaints during a “Nava Kerala Sadas” session prompted a reinvestigation.
The report stated that police traced Mahindra through his son’s friend on Facebook, leading to his arrest in Mumbai on August 19.
Before his arrest, Mahindra had visited Muvattupuzha with his family, revisiting the jewelry store where the theft occurred.
Overwhelmed by guilt, he decided to apologize and repay his former employer. At Bengaluru airport, Mahindra reportedly fell at Venugopal’s feet, asking for forgiveness.
The report added that Mahindra’s son delivered the repayment to Venugopal in Muvattupuzha on Wednesday.
Moved by the apology and restitution, Venugopal withdrew the case against his former employee.
Mahindra’s arrest was not without incident, as police faced resistance from his associates at his Mulund residence.
Despite this, he was successfully apprehended and transported to Muvattupuzha via Bengaluru.
Currently on remand, Mahindra faces charges of betrayal of trust. This case highlights the complexities of long-unsolved crimes and the potential for redemption, even after nearly two decades.
