Hoshiarpur, August 28: Police have arrested a jeweller and his two sons from Hyderabad for allegedly defrauding a trader in Amritsar of over 5 kilograms of gold ornaments valued at more than Rs 3 crore.

The accused, Rajiv Verma, owner of a jewellery shop in Mukerian, and his sons Rohan and Sayam Verma were apprehended after a police investigation.

As per a report by The Tribune, authorities have recovered 2.31 kilograms of gold ornaments and 36.60 carats of diamonds from the suspects.

The Mukerian DSP, Lalit Kumar, detailed how the Verma family had invited Kapil Chohan, a trader from Amritsar, to bring gold ornaments to their shop last month to showcase them to potential customers.

The report added that after gaining Chohan’s trust, the Vermas allegedly retained more than 5 kilograms of gold under the guise of showing it to customers who would arrive later.

However, they still need to return the gold and pay Chohan, who estimated the value of the ornaments to be Rs 3.27 crore. The family then disappeared, prompting Chohan to file a complaint.

According to the report, an FIR was registered at the Mukerian police station on July 27, and the police used technical surveillance to track the accused to Hyderabad, where they were arrested on August 24.

The police have secured a five-day remand for the suspects and are continuing their investigation to recover the remaining gold ornaments.
